The big one that got away. (Bonus points if you can guess what it is.)

  1. Great guess but … it's very much alive. Let's eliminate some possibilities. It's not an orca, porpoise, or dolphin. Not shown in the picture was a second fin, perhaps 20 feet aft of the first one. Both belonged to the same creature. What could it be?

  4. Since I posted the image,I have been traveling and (mostly) away from the blog … The creature is a basking shark, the second largest living fish. Adults grow to over 25 feet in length. They float on the surface of the ocean and feed on plankton (they are not known to attack humans). The image I posted was taken off the coast of Cornwall, from a small open boat. We were among a school of a dozen or so basking sharks and we got quite close to several of them. They ignored us—a good thing since our boat was barely half their length.
